Engaging with an audience in art & design

Game Maker

In this unit we have to research three game genres, then choose one and create a presentation, which has to include game design items such as assets, gameplay and game mechanics. We have to present the unit as if we are trying to pitch this idea to someone, to convince them that this game is the next big thing.

The 3 genres I’ve chose to research are RPG, MOBA and Shooters. The main big difference between these is the way you play them. RPG’s and MOBA’s usually require more thought and planning, RPG’s usually have a much greater story and requires more time, while Shooters and MOBA’s are usually short games which can last from 10 minutes to 50 minutes and sometimes more. They also focus more on the reaction and teamwork, while most RPG’s are played single-player and slowly advance towards your goal. Another difference would be the camera angles, which can be from First Person to 3rd Person and Top-Down. This can change the players experience drastically.

The game will be a high paced Hack and slash RPG game, with the camera set Top-Down. We play as Sepiroth, a demon which tries to kill his father Lucifer, as a chance to redemption. The game will take place mostly in hell, where you have to advance trough hordes of demons and other creatures, fight bosses on each different floor of hell, and finally fight Lucifer himself. As game mechanics, it will have a classic leveling up system, where by killing monsters you achieve souls to level up, but you also have the choice of spending those souls on different items from shops trough out the game and upgrades for your abilities. This way the player has to carefully manage the amount of souls used to craft items and the amount kept for leveling up. The character will have 6 different skills, each of them improving with time and upgrades. The health and energy system will be based on the Diablo 3 one, where you can consume different potions and food to regenerate it.  Each level will be randomly generated, with different paths, monsters and shops. The game will not have a map for the players to follow, so they have to find their own way through the horrors of hell.

The main character will also physically evolve every 10 levels, becoming more and more terrifying. I’ve designed 3 of the stages of his evolutions.

The starting cinematic will have us go through Sepiroth life, from his birth to present day. Then the game will start with us in a tube station, taking making our way to hell, which looks just like our world, only more apocalyptic and hellish, with a burning red sky and fallen buildings. This is the scene that I decided to create. The design of the game will be heavely influenced by Wolf Among Us, with toon outlines and shaders, and also hand painted textures in photoshop.

I am fairy pleased with the final outcome, I like the general look of the scene. If I would change something, that would be the textures on the concrete walls, and add more details in the second part, make it look more hellish, because I dont think it has enough.
