 Unit 5

Here are some British Public safety films i've research for the Fire Safety Animation project

This second video presents a girl who's thinking about her crush, when suddenly her fairy godmother appeared to grant her three wishes. Obvious, she wished for her crush to be there, and to be at the sea side. When she asked him to join her for a swim, he rejected her saying that "swimming is not his style". Realizing that he actually didn't knew how to swim, she used her 3rd wish for Mike to be there because hecan swim. The guy that was left alone there called the fairy and wished that he wouldn't keep losing girls, and she replied with "then learn to swim boy, learn to swim". This one has an approach that embarrasses you, it gives a message as "if you don't know how to swim, you won't get the girl". It's a good way to makepeople learn, but it's not my favorite one.

Research

This first video presents a funny looking couple having a picnic when, they see a man sailing his boat. Theyfirst think he is having fun, jumping of and on the boat into the water and waving at them, when he started to shout, they first thought he was just greeting them, just to realize that he was actually yelling "HELP!! - DIAL 999 AND ASK FOR THE COASTGUARD". This animation has a funny approach to teaching others that if you see a boat that you think it may be in distress to call 999 and ask for the coastguard.

The third video, even tough it's not an animation one, it's one of my favorites. It as an approach the feeling of guilt, shock. We can see a little child who runs around the beach, playing. Everything seems fine but suddenly, while running, the camera stops just a moment before he steps in a broken glass, leaving the rest to your imagination. In my opinion this is the best way to teach someone a lesson, because making you laugh or feel embarrassed, it doesn't mean it will stick in your head, but seeing a child about to step on a broken glass, shocks you, makes you feel guilty, and when you are about to litter, this video will pop up in your head, stopping you from doing so.

Experimentation

Here I made some basic shapes morphing from a circle to a pentagon, to a square and back to a circle.I did that using the Rectangle,Oval and PolyStar tools and the Create shape tween tool.

As my second experimentation I did a bouncing ball. I did this using the Oval tool and the Create Motion tween tool.

As my third experimentation I did a simple gun firing a bullet. I had to use multiple layers for each element: the gun, the fire blast and the bullet, then I used the Create Motion tween tool

Here, we were given a series of photos and we hate to use a technique named Rotoscoping. That basically means we had to outline the shape of the person multiple times, frame by frame. This technique was used by the Walt Disney company, in the making of Snow White, which was a big step in animation.

Here are some experimentations I did in Adobe Flash, learning the basics of it for my Fire Safety Animation project.

Storyboard

This scene was the scene I started building first. Here the character takes the matches even though the cat told him he shouldn't. I used keyframes when I made theyr mouths, and for a more realistic look, I first watched myself in a mirror to see how my mouths move when I say his sentence. I rotoscoped the hand picking up the matches after a video of myself.

The second scene I've chosen, is the one where he he stares at the match, while it burns slowly towards his hand. I found this scene pretty funny to make because of the expression I had to go trough, to find one that suited him for when he got burned. Again, I used a series of keyframes for this scene.

The 3rd scene that i've choose, is the one where he runs out of the kitchen/house while it is on fire. I had to rotoscope Timy running, and i used a short clip from the cartoon series called Scooby-Doo. I had fun making this scene too. The only thing that I would change is that the cat just suddenly appears on his back, I'm thinking of making it jump on his back.

The 4th scene that I've chosen is the scene where Timy is outside his house, while it burns. He is crying and he says that he will never play with fire again. The changes that i want to make in this scene are the fireman's car, the fence, and the green space.

Here are some refference images i researched for my kitchen background. From the first one i liked how the outline made it look cartoonish, which was what i was looking for. In the second picture i find the arrangement of the kitchen quite good, and i find to fit my needs of a simple but nicely looking kitchen. From the third one  i really like the shadows and i'll try to implement them into my scene

I used this images as refference for the key "objects" in my scene, and have a basic understanding of how they are made. I used the matchbox style of drawing, but i've designed my own matchbox. I used the firemans pose for my fireman in the last scene. From the fire i took colors and created my own fire, a little bit more haotic, because I tought that this one is to "calm" and that it doesn't show how real the threat of fire is.

This is a quick storyboard i've created for my Fire Safety Animation, the story is simple: Parents leaving home, Timy is left alone and finds some matches which make him want to play with them. When he lights a match he stares at it, and while focused on it he got burned. The matches fell on the ground and started the house fire. In the end Timy is seen in front of his burning house , with firemans trying to put the fire down. There he cries and he and his cat have a short conversation about playing with fire.

This is my character design, I was looking for a fast, simple but good looking character. This is what came out after a series of sketches. I still have to work on the "good looking" part.

Here are four of my scenes which I've chosen to explain how I've made it and what I would change.

This is the final product of unit 5, Fire Safety Animation. The sound effects are a bit poor in quantity, because I didn't wanted to add something quick and sound bad, so I've choose the ones that fit the animation, and discared the rest.
